Prep Soccer: Season Recap

The Prep Soccer season came to a disappointing end Friday, November 6, with a devastating loss to Don Bosco in the first round of the state tournament. Prep Soccer finished the season with a regular season record of 12-5-3. Teams that they easily dismantled include Bayonne, Hoboken, Ferris, and Hudson Catholic, beating each by at least seven goals. Prep dominated Hudson County for the most part, defeating a majority of their Hudson County opponents, and tying rivals Union City and Kearny, both state-ranked. Prep’s county tournament came to an end with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Union City in the semi-final match. After attending games throughout the season, fans easily witnessed strong displays of a vibrant cohesive spirit. Having displayed great teamwork throughout the season, they relied on each other for support in challenging matchups.

Junior Alejandro Sanchez, who had some varsity experience this year, enjoyed the season and grew as a result of it. When asked on what he thought of the team’s final game of the season, Alejandro stated, “Don Bosco came to play with a goal within the first fifteen minutes, and then another one later in the half. With an uplifting speech from our coach (during the break), we dominated the second half, leaving them with no shots on target. However, at the end of the day, we could not finish the many chances we had and the team that does ends up winning so they happened to advance. I’m still ready to fight next season during my senior year with this team.”

The team this year consisted of a variety of upperclassmen and underclassmen, which brings hope for the future of the program. Although the loss ended the campaign on a bitter note, the team welcomes a brief offseason before it will begin to prepare for yet another chapter of Prep Soccer. The program says goodbye and a “thank-you” to its hard working seniors, who contributed great service to the team for four years.
