Did “Wreck-It-Ralph” Really Wreck It?

Did Wreck-It-Ralph Really Wreck It?

This movie had been hyped up for a very long time, with trailers, posters, creative commercials, and even a few actual games to go with the characters. But was the hype really worth it? The answer is yes. Yes it was.

The movie is about a video-game villain named Wreck-It Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly), who is not accepted by the other characters of his game, and isn’t even invited to the party for the 30th anniversary of the game. Ralph goes off to prove to them that he could be a good guy, and winds up going to a first-person shooter game, Hero’s Duty, and Sugar Rush (imagine Candyland meets Mario Kart).

In Sugar Rush, we meet Vanellope von Schweetz (voiced by Sarah Silverman), who is also the outcast of her game because she is a glitch. One of my fears was that the 6-year old jokes Schweetz says in the trailer would be constant in the movie, but they don’t last too long. In fact, it seems that Vanellope is more of an adult than Ralph is in most scenes, sporting a more mature sense of humor. Vanellope needs to win the race so she can be a part of the game again and gets Ralph to help her out.

The story seems simple at first; character who is not accepted by anyone, goes out to search for acceptance, learns something greater about himself. But soon there are a few other plots weaved into the initial story, but it’s not hard to keep track of them. The references are funny (if you can understand them), and even though there are product placements, they are played for laughs (Nesquik-sand, Devil (actual) Dogs, Laffy Taffy that laughs).

Overall, the movie was good, and I suggest everyone should see it. All the characters are creative and are given depth. The stories are very creative and captivating. The movie successfully juggles four plots at once, and the performances are great. I give it a 4.5/5.
