On Wednesday, October 15th, seven dedicated students and two teachers, Mr. Fletcher and Ms. Stark, volunteered their time to support the Hoboken Shelter. Their efforts provided a warm meal of rice and beans, potatoes, chicken, salad and peaches to the eighty-five people in need.
After last period ended, students and teachers gathered in HH101. They sorted through Prep students’ donations of socks, hats, pants and coats into different bags. The volunteers also enjoyed some quick pizza to prepare for the upcoming service. At 4:00 p.m., fueled and ready, they traveled to the Hoboken Shelter by light rail.
Upon their 5:00 p.m. arrival, teachers and students immediately got to work; some diced vegetables, some prepared PB&Js (these are then saved for later), and some worked on peach bowls. After service, commitment was again demonstrated by thoroughly cleaning the shelter’s kitchen. They washed the dishes, wiped the counter until its surface shone and even swept the floor, leaving the kitchen spotless and clean. By 7:00 p.m. this successful volunteering effort concluded and all returned home, tired but proud.
