With just five races remaining in the 2025 Formula 1 season, the Constructors’ Championship has already been wrapped up by McLaren. Mclaren sealed the title with dominant performances and minimal resistance from rival teams. But while the team trophy is decided, the Drivers’ Championship is anything but decided and a three-way battle is heating up, with McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri chasing their first title, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen hunting his fifth.
A Season of Shifting Momentum
The season began with Oscar Piastri in commanding form, taking early victories and looking comfortable in first place. His teammate, Lando Norris, stayed close behind, forming a dominant McLaren 1-2 at the top. Meanwhile, Verstappen and Red Bull struggled for consistency, mainly due to handling issues and a car that lacked the performance of previous years.
But a pivotal moment came midseason with the surprising sacking of Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. The decision shocked the paddock, but it marked a turning point for the team. Since then, Red Bull has made a comeback thanks in large part to a powerful upgrade package featuring a redesigned front wing, revised floor aerodynamics, and improved overall drivability. Verstappen quickly capitalized, winning three of the last four races and finishing no lower than second in the past five. Due to this, the once comfortable points gap has rapidly shrunk. Verstappen now sits just 26 points behind second place Norris, a gap that could be closed in a single race.
Pressure that Is Beginning to Show
While Verstappen rises, the pressure is on at McLaren. Oscar Piastri, once praised for his composure, has started to shake under Verstappens push. A recent string of disappointing results, including a crash and finishes of fourth and fifth, has raised questions about his mentalstrength. As world champion Jacques Villeneuve put it after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix: “We’ve always perceived Piastri as this cold, immovable block. But that’s not what we saw this weekend. This comment demonstrating a sign that the championship pressure may be getting to the young Australian.
Lando Norris, too, has struggled to maintain early season form. He’s managed just one win in the last seven races, while Verstappen has managed three. That loss of pace has cost him not only a chance to catch Piastri, but has also left him vulnerable to Verstappen’s charge. One reporter recently described Verstappen as “The T-Rex chasing down the two cars just like in the movies.”
Ferrari’s Glimer of Hope
While the spotlight remained on the title fight, Ferrari quietly delivered a much-needed result in Austin, Texas, finishing third and fourth despite no major upgrades. Both drivers praised the performance, calling it a “positive step” in an otherwise disappointing season.
Their resurgence may not factor into the title race, but it adds another interesting factor for the remaining races, particularly if they can get between the McLarens and Verstappen in upcoming Grands Prixs.
Five Races To Go
With five races to go, the tension is high. McLaren will need to find more pace and composure if they’re to hold off Verstappen. The Dutchman is in peak form — aggressive, focused and hungrier than ever. Expect high tensions as all three drivers fight for the drivers championship. For Piastri and Norris, a first world title is within reach. For Verstappen, the chance to become a five-time world champion has now become a reality.
The hunt is on, and the T-Rex isn’t slowing down.
